JEE Main vs JEE Advanced: What Should Navi Mumbai Students Focus On?

June 5, 2026 6 min read

One of the most common questions we hear from engineering aspirants in Navi Mumbai is: "Should I prepare for JEE Main or JEE Advanced?" The honest answer is — both, but with the right emphasis at the right time.

Key Differences at a Glance

AspectJEE MainJEE Advanced
PurposeNITs, IIITs, GFTIs + eligibility for AdvancedIITs only
AttemptsTwice a year (Jan & Apr)Once a year (May/June)
DifficultyModerate, NCERT-alignedHigh, conceptually deep and tricky
Question styleSingle-correct MCQs + numerical valueMultiple-correct, matrix match, integer type, paragraph

The Right Preparation Strategy

Class 11 and early Class 12: Prepare at JEE Advanced depth from the start. Advanced-level conceptual clarity makes Main feel easy, but the reverse is not true. Master NCERT thoroughly, then build up with problem books for Physics (mechanics, electromagnetism), Maths (calculus, algebra) and Chemistry (physical + organic mechanisms).

Before JEE Main sessions: Shift to speed and accuracy. Practise 75-question papers in 3 hours, focus on high-weightage chapters, and revise NCERT Chemistry (especially inorganic) which is heavily rewarded in Main.

After qualifying for Advanced: You get roughly 6–8 weeks. Use them for multi-concept problems, previous years' Advanced papers (at least the last 10 years), and building stamina for two 3-hour papers in one day.

Which Colleges Can You Target?

A strong JEE Main rank alone opens doors to top NITs (Trichy, Warangal, Surathkal), IIIT Hyderabad (via its own criteria) and excellent state colleges in Maharashtra through MHT-CET counselling. JEE Advanced is your gateway to the 23 IITs. Many of our students keep both options open — and that is exactly what we recommend.

How Nidaan Career Prepares You for Both

At our Kamothe, Navi Mumbai centre, our JEE faculty — including Vipin Agrawal (JEE Mathematics) — teach at Advanced depth while running regular Main-pattern mock tests. More than 25% of our students have secured admissions in IITs. Small batches mean every doubt gets addressed the same day.
